Have
you ever wondered what makes a cashmere blanket
or cashmere throw so special?
It’s
hard to believe but those same fibers in our
cashmere blanket that keep our customers warm and
comfortable once kept a Kashmir goat living in
cold, harsh temperatures warm too. In
the frigid climates where the Kashmir goats
live, they grow a very soft, downy undercoat of
hair that protects them from the very cold air.
These cashmere fibers are only harvested after
the winter, during the goats annual molting
season through shedding or shearing. This is
what makes cashmere so labor intensive to
produce. Due to its rarity and expense, cashmere
started out as the fabric of royals. |

Cashmere blankets and throws have evolved from
the original popularity of cashmere shawls.
Cashmere shawls are first historically mentioned
in documents dating all the way back to the 3rd
century B.C. But credit for the founding of the
cashmere industry is given to the 15th century
ruler of Kashmir, Zayn-ul-Abidin. |
|
 |
Rumor has it that Napoleon made the
cashmere shawls popular by sending his
second wife 17 of them. By the 18th
& 19th century cashmere was a
thriving industry producing shawls from
Tibet and Tartary. Throughout history
many have continued to appreciate the
luxury and warmth of cashmere and the
industry has expanded from shawls to the
cashmere blankets and cashmere throws we
know and love today. |
