Spring Cleaning: Storing Cashmere with Confidence!

With warmer days at hand, one wants to make room for summer fun at home! If you are doing some Spring Cleaning and have cashmere blankets or cashmere throws that you may want to store, remember cashmere needs special care!

Here are a few tips for storing cashmere blankets and other cashmere items properly so that you may enjoy them for many seasons to come!

First, when storing cashmere, know that all cashmere MUST be stored CLEAN. Follow the appropriate steps as outlined in the care instructions on your cashmere item. Some cashmere blankets and cashmere throws may be hand washed in lukewarm water with special laundry detergent such as Le Blanc linen wash. Again, double check the label. A dry clean only label means exactly that: dry clean only!

Second, cashmere likes to breathe, so storing cashmere throws or cashmere sweaters in muslin or canvas bags is recommended. Avoid any air-tight packaging

Third, moths LOVE cashmere, too! Purchase your favored moth deterrent to ensure they do not consume your beloved cashmere blankets before you get the pleasure of using them again. Cedar blocks and mothballs work, as do a litany of other natural solutions (see link below).

Fourth, whichever moth deterrent you use, contain it in a sachet NEXT to the cashmere item in the bag, not on top of the cashmere, which may cause staining.

Fifth, store the bags on a shelf, preferably in a low-humidity setting. If you are storing cashmere, such as cashmere blankets or cashmere throws, in a basement or an attic, you may want to consider use of a dehumifier.
